Fox & Chave is very proud to share our recent work in collaboration with two Santa Fe-based cultural institutions: Museum of International Folk Art and the Museum of Indian Arts + Culture. The textiles that inspired the larger group of eight scarf patterns represents the cultural and craft tradition of women artisans from Latin America and Asia, Europe and the Southwestern United States.
With this in mind, we’ve used one of the silks from this exciting new collection to showcase how one silk can be worn in many ways. We’ll use our new Forest Lights silk. This lush and colourful design is printed on a medium habotai scarf. It is inspired by an embroidered huipil (blouse), from Guatemala ca. 1960 from the collections of the Museum of International Folk Art. This means that royalties from the sale of this silk directly support this museum.
We adore the vivid pop in this pattern, however with over 100 styles and designs in our catalogue, there are so many different options that would work to pull off the looks showcased in this blog. Part of the fun is experimenting!

1. CLASSIC SCARF
Let's begin with the timeless "Classic Scarf" look (above). The most popular way to wear a scarf is, of course, around the neck. This style involves a simple wrap and overlap at the front, but the result is a stunning burst of vibrant colours, guaranteed to bring life to any colour-blocked outfit, such as a suit, or pattern-free neutrals.
2. HEADBAND
Bygone are the days a scarf singularly adorns the neck. The second look is all about tying a scarf around your head. It looks classier than it sounds!
Fold your scarf in succession until you’ve created a long, thin, rectangular band. Take the thin strip and wrap it around the base of your head. Hold the tail ends in front of you. The ends should be the same length.
Combine the ends together so they overlap at the top of your forehead. Knot and twist the ends as you bring them to the back of your head.
To secure the scarf, tie a knot and tuck in any excess material into the back, or let it hang. Now you have a decidedly bold head band.
3. NECKLACE
This one is a bit unconventional, but rectangular scarves like this make an excellent choker-type necklace.
This can be a stylish and unique fashion statement. Here's how to do it: Lay the scarf flat and fold it in half lengthwise, possibly twice, so it forms a thinner strip.
Gently wrap the folded scarf around your neck, positioning it like a choker. Tuck in the loose ends. Et voila.
