Chave silk tie features elements from the painting \u003cem\u003eWasserschlangen II\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e(1907), in English \u003cem\u003eWaterserpents II,\u003c\/em\u003e by the Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe painting has had a colourful history. It was originally commissioned for Jenny Steiner, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, and after the death of her husband Gebrüder Steiner, was herself the director of a silk manufacturing company.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder the Anschluss of 1938 and being of Jewish heritage, her family's factories were expropriated by the Nazis and her extensive art collection, which included many works by Klimt including \u003cem\u003eWasserschlangen II, \u003c\/em\u003ewas stolen and auctioned in Vienna beginning in 1940.
