An inspiring Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with an intricate rug design of floral motifs and borders over a deep red ground and typical of those from Persian culture.

Persian rug making dates back over 2,500 years, rooted in the nomadic traditions of ancient Persia, now modern-day Iran. Initially, these rugs served practical purposes, like protection from harsh weather, but gradually evolved into an art form celebrated for its intricate designs and craftsmanship.

By the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE), Persian rugs had become symbols of status and luxury, gaining renown across the ancient world. The Safavid dynasty (1501–1736) marked the golden age of Persian rug production, as weaving techniques advanced, and royal workshops produced exquisite rugs featuring elaborate patterns, floral motifs, and vibrant colours.

Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, proposed by historians to be a site used primarily to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, at the time of the Spring Equinox.
