THE NEW BUILDING - POLLOK COUNTRY PARK, GLASGOW

The reopening of an architectural gem and a national treasure trove.

This month sees the delayed reopening of the magnificent Burrell Collection of Art, in Glasgow, after a £68 million-pound, 8-year refurbishment, which did not simply make vital repairs to the building, increase gallery space by over a third, improve accessibility but also set extremely high standards of sustainability. Insulation and ventilation have been optimised, low energy lighting and solar panels have been installed.

All materials removed from the old building have been recycled, saving an incredible 27 tons of carbon dioxide. Funding was provided by Glasgow City Council, National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Scottish and UK Governments and private donors and trusts and involved 15000 local people.

Sir William Burrell (dates), a Scottish shipping magnate, and his wife, heiress Constance Lockhart Mitchell, were ardent art lovers and donated their collection of 6000 pieces to Glasgow City in 1944, adding another 3000 pieces after the gift.

A further sum was given by the couple to house the collection, with a stipulation that it should remain together and that a suitable building be created, protected from the pollution of the city. In 1967, the location was chosen when Pollok Country Park was bequeathed to the city.

An architectural competition was won by Barry Gasson, who was commissioned to build the collection’s home, with John Meunier and Brit Andersen, in the Park. The L-shaped Gallery has A list architectural status bestowed by Historic Scotland.

Through curtain walling along its galleries, it offers extensive views of Pollok Country Park, with lawns on one side and woodland on the other, with many architectural artefacts built into the structure of the building, including the beautiful 16th century archway entrance.

Fox & Chave, as part of its wholesale business and licensing programme, is very proud to have collaborated for many years with Glasgow Life, the charity that manages the Collection. For the opening, we have developed beautiful scarf and tie designs inspired by the Collection’s Suzani textiles, a Stained Glass tie from their Medieval treasures and a tie featuring the iconic outline of The Thinker.

This mini range will be part of the first gift shop offering at Pollok Country Park, when it opens at the end of March, and is also available from our own website. Royalties from all sales benefit Glasgow Life and the magnificent art collections they manage across the city.

Further designs are planned in partnership with The Burrell Collection.
