Byzantine Leopard

An important Byzantine mosaic collection was established in Beiteddine Palace, mostly from discoveries in the coastal town of Jiyyeh (ancient Porphyrion) in modern day Lebanon.  They date from the 5-6th centuries. The designs are often geometric, but there are also interesting depictions of animals and religious figures.

This design depicts a fifth century Byzantine mosaic of a leopard which is preserved at the Beiteddine Palace in Lebanon.
