DESIGNER'S NOTES
A laminated tote style bag featuring a blue variation of the central pattern from the painting Hope II by the Austrian symbolist artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918).
Klimt used pattern as both surface ornament and symbolic language, dissolving the boundary between figure and background. Influenced by Byzantine mosaics, Japanese prints and Viennese decorative arts, he covered canvases with spirals, squares, eyes and floral motifs rendered in shimmering gold and rich colour.
These repeating forms envelop his figures, often contrasting flat decorative planes with sensitively modelled faces and bodies, creating tension between abstraction and realism.
Pattern in his work is not merely decorative but conveys sensuality, transcendence and psychological depth, turning garments, landscapes and even empty space into fields of symbolic resonance that define his distinctive style within the Viennese Secession.
