DESIGNER'S NOTES
A Fox & Chave silk crêpe de chine scarf with a typical Art Deco scallop pattern in black and white reminiscent of the architectural forms of the Chrysler Building in New York City.
The New York variant of the Art Deco style, combined glamour with machine-age sensibilities, influenced everything from skyscrapers and theatres to residential buildings and interiors. Key features included streamlined facades, rich materials like marble and bronze, and ornate decorative elements, often inspired by exotic and ancient motifs.
The city’s subway system was also transformed with the style in the 1930s. Station entrances and interiors, incorporated Art Deco designs with stylised metalwork and streamlined fixtures.
The 50th Street station on the Eighth Avenue line, for instance, features intricate tile mosaics and geometric patterns that nod to the Art Deco aesthetic, linking the elegance of the skyscrapers above to the subway below.
