DESIGNER'S NOTES
A colourful Fox & Chave silk tie featuring elements from the work Les Comodas (1947) by the French fauvist artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954).
Created for the 1947 Jazz portfolio, Les Codomas exemplifies Matisse’s radical gouaches découpés method. Confined by illness, he painted paper with bright colours, cut shaes using scissors and assembled the results into the final work, merging draughtsmanship and chromatic saturation to realise the ultimate Fauvist ambition: drawing entirely with pure colour.
The composition depicts the famous aerial trapeze duo suspended in space: an undulating yellow form soaring between blue and white apparatus lines above a gridded black safety net. Symbolically, the high-flying acrobats represent the Modernist artist as a daring performer, navigating tension, trusting pure instinct, and taking exhilarating creative leaps into the void, entirely liberated from physical limitation.
