DESIGNER'S NOTES
A dusky pink Fox & Chave silk tie with pale cream tulip blooms and stylised carnations after a textile design by William Morris (1834-1896).
William Morris and his firm, Morris & Co., drew heavily from the Isnik and Damascus styles, integrating Middle Eastern aesthetics into the English Arts and Crafts movement. Morris studied Persian carpets and Moorish tiles, admiring their structured geometry and rhythmic botanical repeats. He championed the use of traditional natural dyes, like indigo and madder, to replicate the rich, saturated palettes found in historical Eastern textiles.
The Wild Tulip pattern (1884) exemplifies this synthesis. Its interlocking stems and dense, scrolling foliage reflect the mathematical precision of Persian floral motifs, yet they are reimagined through an English pastoral lens. By blending Islamic formal arrangements with British flora, Morris created a timeless, hybrid aesthetic.
