Samawah carpets, produced by the Shammar and other tribes in southern Iraq, are distinguished by their bold geometric designs, earthy palettes and compact knotting technique. Woven from hand-spun wool, they often feature repeating diamond motifs, stylised stars and cross patterns that carry symbolic meaning, referencing protection, fertility and tribal identity.

The Samawah region’s carpets are smaller than many Persian or Anatolian rugs, designed for domestic use and portability, yet their dense pile and intricate motifs display remarkable craftsmanship.

Colour comes from natural dyes derived from local plants and insects, producing warm reds, browns and indigos. These carpets provide insight into nomadic life, blending practical function with visual storytelling, and remain sought after by collectors for their authenticity and vibrant tribal aesthetic.
