EDITOR'S NOTES
The Egyptian Book of the Dead is an ancient funerary text consisting of spells, prayers, and incantations intended to guide the deceased through the afterlife.
Compiled during the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1069 BCE), it was often written on papyrus scrolls and buried with the dead.
The text includes instructions for navigating the underworld, passing judgment by the god Osiris, and achieving eternal life. Richly illustrated with scenes of the afterlife, the Book of the Dead reflects the Egyptians' deep beliefs in immortality, the soul's journey, and the importance of moral righteousness for a successful transition to the afterlife.
This illustrated edition contains images from the Papyrus of Ani, an ancient Egyptian scroll narrating the journey of Theban scribe Ani through the underworld. Its accompanying hieroglyphic text has been translated by acclaimed EgyptologistE.A Wallis Budge.
