A cream Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a variety of flags known as Ensigns and Burgees used in nautical identification.

Ensigns are large rectangular flags flown from the stern to declare a vessel's nationality and legal status, such as the British Red Ensign for merchant ships. In contrast, burgees are small, typically triangular pennants flown from the masthead to signify membership in a specific yacht club or sailing organisation.

While ensigns fulfil a legal requirement of international maritime law, burgees represent a sailor's social and professional affiliations, together identifying exactly who a vessel belongs to and where its home port lies.
