The leather Gladstone bag became the quintessential symbol of the visiting family doctor, designed to carry essential diagnostic tools, medicines, and surgical instruments directly to a patient's bedside.

Central to these house calls was the stethoscope. Invented in 1816 by French physician René Laennec, who initially rolled a sheet of paper into a tube to avoid placing his ear directly on a female patient's chest, the device revolutionised medicine. Later refined into the binaural, flexible design used today, the stethoscope transformed physical examination from simple observation to internal listening, serving as an irreplaceable emblem of general medical practice.
