DESIGNER'S NOTES
A fascinating Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf detailing the three-dimensional structure of the DNA molecule.
The discovery of the DNA double helix by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 transformed not only biology but also visual culture. Its elegant, twisting ladder structure inspired designers to explore spirals, interlocking forms and modular repetition in architecture, textiles and jewellery.
Artists have used the double helix as a metaphor for connectivity, identity and the hidden structures underlying life, appearing in sculpture, painting and digital media. In fashion, prints and patterns mimic its helical rhythm, while in industrial design, spiralling staircases and helical frameworks echo its geometry.
The fascination with its symmetry and balance also influenced graphic design, encouraging compositions based on intertwined lines, rotation and mirrored forms, marrying scientific precision with aesthetic innovation.
