Roman Mosaic Chiffon Scarf

DESIGNER'S NOTES

A warm Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a repeat pattern with elements from a mosaic in shades of umber, sand, wine and dusky pink, typical of those from Ancient Rome.

The predominance of the Roman Empire extended beyond Europe, into the middle east and North Africa. Mosaics have been discovered in many of these former territories. The ancient Roman city of Jerash (Gerasa) and the Nabataean city of Petra, which was later Romanised, contain beautiful mosaic floors in their churches and public buildings.

Mosaics in Israel reflect both Roman and early Christian influences, such as those found in Roman-era synagogues, villas, and churches.

While Greece had its own traditions in mosaic art, Roman influence is evident in many mosaics found in cities like Corinth, Thessaloniki, and Athens. On Cyprus in the towns of Paphos and Kourion mosaics depict mythological scenes and are well-preserved examples of the artistry of the time.
