DESIGNER'S NOTES

A magical Fox & Chave silk bow tie with a design after an element of the painting The Starry Night (1889) by the post-impressionist Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890).

The painting depicts a swirling night sky over the village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The sky is alive with vibrant blues and yellows, showcasing dynamic, swirling patterns of stars and clouds with a prominent cypress tree in the foreground. It was painted from Van Gogh's room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, where he was staying during a period of mental health treatment in 1889.

The expressive brushstrokes and vivid colours convey intense emotion and a sense of movement, reflecting van Gogh's unique post-impressionist style.

The painting’s composition also echoes the influence of Asian art, particularly Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), which van Gogh admired. He collected Japanese prints, drawn to their bold outlines, flat areas of colour, and innovative compositions. Artists like Hiroshige and Hokusai inspired van Gogh to experiment with strong linear elements and rhythmic patterns.
