During Japan’s Edo period, the crane or tsuru emerged as a paramount symbol of longevity, auspiciousness, and marital fidelity. Renowned for pairing for life, these majestic birds featured prominently across folding screens, woodblock prints, and fine lacquerware.

Masters like Ogata Kōrin simplified their avian forms into striking, graphic silhouettes, while printmakers like Hokusai and Hiroshige rendered them soaring over misty pine forests. Often set against glowing gold leaf or paired with rising suns, cranes embodied collective wishes for good fortune and eternal youth.
