DESIGNER'S NOTES

White cotton boxer shorts with a repeat pattern of naval signal flags over a repeating text pattern that reads 'England expects that every man shall do his duty' from the pen of the British cartoonist and illustrator Bryn Parry (1956-2023).

The phrase was signalled by Admiral Horatio Nelson to the British fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. Nelson, preparing to engage the combined French and Spanish navies, wanted to rally his men with a message that appealed to national pride and personal responsibility. Using the signal flags system of the time, the words were hoisted aboard his flagship, HMS Victory, just before battle commenced. The fleet responded with cheers, and the signal became one of the most famous patriotic expressions in British history, later memorialised in countless paintings, monuments and naval traditions.

Bryn Parry is a best-selling country-sports cartoonist and author whose endearing dogs, retaliating pheasants and other animals have all appeared on Fox & Chave products.

Over the years, Bryn has also given the world rugged rugby players, grumpy golfers be-wellied folk and lots of sheep, thoroughly enjoying their country pursuits.
