DESIGNER'S NOTES

A distinct Fox & Chave crêpe de chine silk scarf with a repeat pattern of walking figures in the unmistakable style of English artist L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) derived from the painting Going to Work (1959).

An earlier work with the same title was created in 1943 by Lowry depicting a broadly similar scene of a crowd of factory workers walking in the street of an undisclosed northern English town.

The two images differ in the simplicity and bright colours in the rendering of the latter work as compared to the version painted over 15 years earlier, a continuing trend by Lowry with works depicting similar industrial scenes from as early as the the 1920s showing greater detail still and a more sombre colour palette.

This tendency towards greater and greater minimalism of execution became the signature of the artist so much so that 'matchstick men', became synonymous with Lowry, with songs written about them as well as his 'matchstick cats & dogs'.
