DESIGNER'S NOTES

A detailed geometric Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf with a design typical of decorative ceramics in the Kingdom of Morocco.

Originating in tenth-century North Africa, Moroccan Zellige is an intricate art form of hand-chiselled terracotta tile work that embodies Islamic geometric abstraction. Master artisans or maâlems hand-cut glazed terracotta tiles into precise tesserae, setting them face down into complex, non-repetitive mathematical compositions without pre-drawn diagrams. Featuring vibrant shades of cobalt blue, emerald green, saffron yellow, and glossy black against stark white, these intricate starbursts, interlacing ribbons, and geometric stars symbolise infinite divine order.

Adorning Moroccan fountains, courtyards, and mosques, Zellige transforms rigid walls into shimmering, highly textured mosaics. Each tile’s subtle surface irregularity catches ambient sunlight, creating a dynamic, rhythmic luminosity that epitomizes enduring Moorish architectural craftsmanship and refined decorative spatial elegance.

STYLING

A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow. You can even create a shawl effect by knotting two scarves together behind your neck and allowing them to drape over your shoulders.
