DESIGNER'S NOTES
This classic silver plated bangle featuring a red poppy.
Poppies have maintained a powerful presence in art, representing beauty, mortality, and sleep. Their bright red petals evoke blood, linking them to wartime sacrifice, particularly after World War I. Artists including John Singer Sargent and Paul Nash depicted poppies to commemorate soldiers, intertwining grief with resilience.
Earlier representations associated poppies with dreams, sleep, and life’s transience, connected to opium and classical symbolism. In European folk traditions, red poppies also conveyed fertility and renewal, highlighting their symbolic versatility. Their simple, striking form enables artists to convey complex emotion and cultural meaning.
Across painting, print, and decorative arts, poppies function as both a visual and symbolic language of remembrance, mortality, and hope.
