DESIGNER'S NOTES

A Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a repeat print of Dodo birds over a sky blue ground, from illustrations by John Tenniel (1820-1914).

Native to Mauritius and extinct by the late seventeenth century, the dodo has fascinated artists and writers as a symbol of obsolescence and exoticism.

In early illustrations, it appeared in natural history studies, often depicted with exaggerated features reflecting curiosity and misunderstanding. In literature, the dodo gained prominence in works such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, where it embodies whimsy and absurdity.

Painters and sculptors have portrayed the bird to explore themes of extinction, human impact on nature, and the fragility of ecosystems. Its unusual appearance, combined with the poignancy of its disappearance, has made the dodo a recurring subject in fine art, decorative motifs, and popular culture, bridging natural history and imaginative expression.
