A cream Fox & Chave silk tie with an example of the double-hemisphere world map design.

This kind of map was perfected during the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography in the seventeenth century. Moving away from single rectangular projections, cartographers like Gerardus Mercator, Joan Blaeu, and Nicolaes Visscher split the globe into Eastern and Western circular projections to reduce distortion at the poles.

These copperplate engravings combined navigational science with decorative baroque artistry. Mapmakers filled the spandrels between hemispheres with allegorical figures, celestial charts, polar inserts, and vignettes of the four elements or seasons, transforming functional tools of maritime exploration into prestigious symbols of wealth and world knowledge.
