DESIGNER'S NOTES
A classy floral Fox & Chave silk tie in muted shades of lavender and grey rendered in an art nouveau style repeat and after a design for soft furnishings by William Butterfield (1814–1900).
Butterfield was an English architect best known for his work in the Gothic Revival style, particularly his use of polychrome brickwork.
A devout High Anglican, he played a key role in the architectural expression of the Oxford Movement, designing churches, schools, and colleges that emphasised traditional craftsmanship and religious symbolism. His most famous work is Keble College, Oxford, completed in 1876, which sparked controversy for its bold use of coloured brick.
Butterfield was known for his meticulous attention to detail and often designed furnishings to complement his buildings. Despite his influence, he was a private man, rarely giving interviews or discussing his personal life. He was offered a knighthood late in life but declined it, preferring to remain focused on his work rather than seek public recognition.
