DESIGNER'S NOTES
This woven Fox & Chave silk tie features a repeat of gold crowns over a deep purple ground.
In ancient times, purple dye was extracted from certain mollusks, particularly the Murex snail found in the Mediterranean Sea. Extracting the dye was a labor-intensive process, requiring thousands of snails to produce a small amount of dye. As a result, purple dye was extremely rare and expensive, making it accessible only to the wealthy and powerful.
Due to the high cost of this dye, it became closely associated with royalty and nobility. Kings, queens and emperors often wore clothing dyed purple to signify their wealth, status, and authority.
In some cultures, laws known as sumptuary laws regulated the colours and types of clothing that different social classes were permitted to wear. Purple was often reserved exclusively for royalty and high-ranking officials.
