DESIGNER'S NOTES
A sophisticated Fox & Chave printed silk tie with a design of sketches made by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) for an unrealised bronze sculpture named Il Gran Cavallo or Leonardo's Horse.
Commissioned by Ludovico Sforza the Duke of Milan in 1482, the sculpture was intended to be colossal and the largest equine sculpture in the world. The final work failed to materialise because the metal intended for the statue was repurposed for weapons. Only a clay model was made, which was later destroyed.
da Vinci originally planned to cast the massive statue in one single bronze pour, a feat of engineering that would have been unprecedented at the time.
