DESIGNER'S NOTES

A Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a design featuring elements from a work made with dyes on silk by the English contemporary artist and designer Hilary Simon entitled Respects to Frida Kahlo (2002).

Hilary Simon trained as a theatre and costume designer. She has worked in the theatre, television and film industry and makes paintings on ceramics, designs murals on tiles, makes greeting cards, gift wraps and posters.

Painting with dyes on silk involves applying vibrant, translucent colours that soak into the delicate fibres, creating luminous, soft-edged images impossible to achieve with opaque paints.

Originating in East Asia, particularly China and Japan, this technique requires precise control of water, brush pressure, and timing to avoid bleeding or uneven saturation. Artists use resist methods or careful layering to define forms while preserving silk’s natural sheen.
