DESIGNER'S NOTES
A distinct Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf in Royal Blue and gold and featuring stylised Lotus flowers reminiscent of the depiction of the flower by the ancient Egyptians and echoed in the revival of all things Egypt as a niche component of the Art Deco movement.
The use of Egyptian decorative styles as a part of the Art Deco style was significantly influenced by the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. This archaeological milestone sparked global fascination with ancient Egypt, leading to a cultural and aesthetic craze often termed Egyptomania.
Stylised lotus flowers became a prominent motif in the movement, symbolising purity, rebirth, and eternal life. Their incorporation into Art Deco design was marked by a modern interpretation of the ancient Egyptian aesthetic, characterised by streamlined, geometric forms and rich, vibrant colours.
In architecture, stylised lotus flowers adorned facades, columns, and interior details, often appearing in repetitive, symmetrical patterns that echoed the structured elegance of both Art Deco and ancient Egyptian art. The lotus motif was used in friezes, tiles, and stained glass windows, creating a sense of exoticism and sophistication.
In decorative arts, the lotus flower appeared in textiles, wallpapers, and ceramics. Designers reimagined the flower’s shape into sleek, angular forms, harmonising with Art Deco’s emphasis on modernity and innovation. Jewellery pieces featured lotus designs, with gemstones and precious metals enhancing their luxurious appeal.
