DESIGNER'S NOTES

This classic silver plated pendant features a classic example of the Glasgow rose an iconic art nouveau motif by the Scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).

The Glasgow Rose  crystallised a vision Mackintosh held of organic geometry and spiritual beauty. Derived from the natural spiral of a blooming rose, its stylised form merges botanical observation with mathematical precision, embodying the tension between nature and structure central to Art Nouveau.

The motif, often enclosed within rectilinear frames or grids, represents purity, transformation, and the union of masculine and feminine principles through curve and line. It appeared in stained glass, metalwork, textiles, and furniture, functioning as both ornament and signature. Unlike the ornate Victorian rose, Mackintosh’s version is introspective and abstract, reflecting a distinctly Scottish modernism that sought to reconcile emotional depth with architectural discipline.

STYLING

The pendant is a few centimetres in diameter with a 450mm chain, so style outside high necklines, or against the skin with lower necklines. Wear with jewellery of similar scale, such as a simple silver bracelet.
