DESIGNER'S NOTES
This Fox & Chave silk tie is one of many displaying the designs of William Morris and produced by The Morris Co. for furnishings and wallpaper. This one is derived from a pattern called Bird & Pomegranate originally designed in 1878 and reproduced by the company in 1892 and again in 1926.
In addition to being a prolific designer and socialist activist, Morris was deeply interested in medieval literature, particularly Norse mythology and Icelandic sagas. He even taught himself Old Norse to read these texts in their original language, demonstrating his wide-ranging intellectual curiosity beyond his well-known pursuits in art and politics.
