DESIGNER'S NOTES
A classic Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf in muted greens and yellows after an element from the watercolour Composition by Paul Klee (1879-1940)
Paul Klee’s 1915 watercolour Composition captures his early experimentation with abstraction, predating his Bauhaus period. The work balances geometric forms and flowing lines, producing a rhythmic interplay that evokes both movement and musicality.
Klee used watercolour for its translucency, layering pigments to achieve depth while retaining luminosity. A pivotal work, it represents Klee’s first sustained engagement with abstraction as a primary means of expression rather than a supplement to representation. At this moment, he was synthesising influences from Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism while beginning to develop his own symbolic visual language, where colour, line and shape operate independently to convey emotion and rhythm.
