DESIGNER'S NOTES

A Fox & Chave printed silk tie with a design of Byzantine crosses over an ivory ground, each with intertwining floral decorations.

The Byzantine Cross, rooted in the Eastern Roman Empire, became a prominent Christian symbol from the 4th century onward.

It evolved alongside the Empire’s religious and artistic developments, reflecting the growing significance of Christianity in Byzantine society. The design typically features a vertical shaft longer than the horizontal arms, with some variants including additional arms or a flared cross. These variations were often symbolic, with the extended arms signifying the spreading of divine light or Christ’s teachings.

Byzantine crosses were often adorned with intricate designs, gemstones, and religious icons, especially in church decorations and liturgical objects. This reflected the Empire’s love for opulence and the belief that sacred symbols should be displayed in a grand, revered manner.
