DESIGNER'S NOTES
A rich multi-coloured Fox & Chave silk tie in warm shades of red and orange after the painting Burg und Sonne (1928) by the Swiss-German expressionist painter Paul Klee (1879-1940)
Burg und Sonne or Castle and Sun (1928) is a vivid geometric composition created during his influential teaching years at the Bauhaus. The painting arranges coloured rectangles and triangles into a stylised city or fortress beneath a glowing sun.
Klee often used simplified forms to explore harmony, rhythm, and the emotional effects of colour. The castle suggests human order and culture, while the radiant sun represents energy, life, and cosmic balance.
Rather than depicting a literal place, the work presents a poetic architecture of colour. It reflects Klee’s mature Bauhaus period, when he combined playful abstraction, theory, and symbolism into highly structured yet imaginative compositions.
