DESIGNER'S NOTES
This classic silver plated pendant features an example of mosaic tile design typical of North African Islamic decorative design.
Contemporary North African tile design continues to draw upon Islamic geometric traditions, reinterpreting them through modern materials and abstraction. Mosaics featuring roundels, circular medallions composed of tessellated stone, glass, or ceramic, demonstrate a dialogue between mathematical order and spiritual contemplation.
These roundels often derive from classical zellige and girih systems, where repetition signifies infinity and divine unity. Modern artisans incorporate bolder contrasts, metallic inlays, and irregular tesserae, introducing texture and asymmetry without abandoning sacred geometry.
In Morocco, workshops in Fez and Tetouan combine ancestral cutting techniques with digital pattern planning, bridging heritage and innovation. The resulting designs retain the contemplative rhythm of Islamic art while responding to contemporary architecture’s demand for modularity, sustainability, and intercultural aesthetic fluency.
STYLING
The pendant is a few centimetres in diameter with a 450mm chain, so style outside high necklines, or against the skin with lower necklines. Wear with jewellery of similar scale, such as a simple silver bracelet.
