A wonderfully detailed Fox & Chave silk bow tie with a design of initials composed to create an alphabetic patchwork against a warm red ground.

In medieval European religious manuscripts, these types of letterings are referred to as illuminated initials and fall into two categories; historiated initials when they contain figures or scenes, and decorated initials when they use foliage, beasts, or geometric ornament.

These sit within broader script traditions such as Insular script (early medieval Britain and Ireland), Carolingian minuscule (8th–12th centuries), and later Gothic textura, whose dense vertical strokes dominate high medieval liturgical books.
