DESIGNER'S NOTES
A blue printed Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a colour variation of a pattern created by the Morris Company under the direction of its founder William Morris (1834-1896)
In 1881, Morris undertook a prestigious commission to redecorate the Grand Staircase of St. James’s Palace, creating the 'St. James’s' wallpaper. This project was a significant technical feat for Morris & Co., requiring 68 separate woodblocks to achieve the intricate, multi-layered design.
The pattern features a monumental scale designed specifically for grand state rooms, distinct from Morris’s more intimate domestic styles. It displays a formal, symmetrical arrangement of large, scrolling acanthus leaves and stylised flowers. The dense, intertwining foliage creates a rich, woven effect, mimicking the luxury of silk damask while retaining Morris’s signature naturalistic beauty.
