DESIGNER'S NOTES

This bold Fox & Chave chiffon silk scarf features a design after the oil painting Pink Roses, Chinese Vase by the Scottish artist Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935).

The work was created between 1916 and 1920 and is an example of a still life painting that demonstrates Peploe's strong use of flat areas of bright colour to represent the subject. His philosophy at the time the work was created was that every plane of the subject should necessitate a change in colour.

Peploe was a member of an association of artists referred to as the Scottish Colourists, the group including Francis Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson and Leslie Hunter. While they were all influenced by the French movements of Cubism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Futurism their individual styles don't conform to a particular unifying aesthetic.

However the commonality giving rise to the name of the collective was the experimentation with bold use of colour, vibrant and confident tones, light and shade, and planar brushstrokes.
