A detailed and fascinating Fox & Chave silk tie with a repeat pattern of galloping Persian men on horseback engaging in a game of Polo.
Polo is Persian in origin and is one of the oldest team sports, dating back over 2,000 years and was originally played as a training exercise for cavalry units. The game spread to Central Asia, India, and China, with notable adoption by the Mughal Empire in India.
British colonial officers in India in the 19th century formalised the sport, shaping the modern version of polo and popularising it in Europe and America, where it became symbolic of wealth and the aristocracy.
Polo's structure evolved, and by 1876, the first polo club was established in England and it was included in the Olympic Games from 1900 to 1939. The sport is now played worldwide, with major tournaments in Argentina, the UK, and the US.
