DESIGNER'S NOTES
This large Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf features a wonderful floral design in pastel hues, surrounding an unmistakable representation of the English playwright William Shakespeare.
Derived from the painting Shakespeare's Flowers by the artist Clara Maria Pope (1767 - 1838), a work purchased by Sir John Soane from the artist in 1835.
Pope specialised in Botanical studies and paintings, but the title of the work provides a double meaning. In classical literary theory, 'flowers' might refer to linguistic ornaments or the chief beauties of a poet. The flowers mentioned in Shakespeare's works are amassed into a basket and tilted towards the bust as if presented in tribute, which also conforms to a very modern colloquialism to honour those who have achieved by 'giving them their flowers'.
