DESIGNER'S NOTES

A gold Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a repeat of the classic image by Da Vinci of the Vitruvian Man, a renaissance drawing created by Da Vinci around 1490.

One of the most famous drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, the Vitruvian Man represents both the beauty of the human body and the principles of proportion and symmetry, and based on the work of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, who lived during the 1st century BCE. Created around 1490, Leonardo da Vinci created the drawing that shows a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart, inscribed in both a square and a circle.

In his treatise De Architectura (On Architecture), Vitruvius described the proportions of the human body as being a model of symmetry and balance, which could be applied to architecture.

The drawing symbolises the blend of art and science during the Renaissance, representing a cornerstone of Leonardo’s attempts to relate man to nature.
