DESIGNER'S NOTES
A simple Fox & Chave crêpe de Chine silk scarf with a floral pattern over a cherry red ground after a design originally used for a curtain.
The inception of curtains dates back to ancient civilizations, where textiles were used not only for warmth and privacy but also as markers of wealth and status. In Egypt and Mesopotamia, dyed and embroidered fabrics hung in doorways or temple spaces, while in classical Greece and Rome, curtains were used in theatres, homes, and sanctuaries.
During the medieval period, heavy textiles softened stone interiors in castles and churches, often featuring religious or heraldic motifs. Curtain design evolved significantly in the Renaissance, with patterned silks and woven tapestries adorning windows in aristocratic homes.
By the eighteenth century, elaborate drapery styles with swags, tassels, and valances emerged, blending function and decoration. Curtain design continues to reflect changing tastes in material, pattern, and architectural context.
