DESIGNER'S NOTES
A silk scrunchie with a design after the pattern Acanthus by William Morris & Co.
The Acanthus pattern was designed in the late nineteenth century and draws directly on classical ornament while interpreting it through the Arts and Crafts ethos.
Stylised acanthus leaves twist and curl across the surface, interlacing with stems and buds to create a rhythmic, flowing composition that balances density and openness. Morris combined careful botanical observation with medieval and Renaissance decorative models, producing a pattern that is both naturalistic and highly structured.
The design was used for textiles and wallpapers, where its repeating forms provided continuity across large surfaces. Its elegance and restraint exemplify Morris’s belief in beauty rooted in craftsmanship, proportion and harmonious form.
