A blue Fox & Chave silk tie with a floral design featuring the pattern Windrush by William Morris (1834-1896)

Registered in 1883, Windrush was specifically designed for the Merton Abbey Works, where Morris perfected the indigo discharge technique. This process involved dyeing the entire cloth blue and then using a bleaching agent to remove colour, allowing for the subsequent overprinting of other colours.

The pattern’s structure is defined by its diagonal orientation, a departure from the verticality of his earlier wallpapers. By intertwining the meandering stems with oversized, scrolling foliage, Morris achieved a sense of perpetual motion. It remains a hallmark of his Middle Period, balancing commercial appeal with uncompromising artisanal integrity.
