DESIGNER'S NOTES

A Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf with a floral design originally created by G. P. and J. Baker for Liberty of London around 1900.

G. P. and J. Baker's designs exemplify the transition between Victorian exuberance and emerging modern aesthetics. Drawing on the Arts and Crafts movement’s respect for nature and craftsmanship, their textiles feature botanically accurate yet stylised flowers, leaves, and vines arranged in harmonious compositions.

The colour palettes balance muted earth tones with occasional bursts of brighter hues, creating refined yet approachable designs. These patterns were widely used in dress fabrics and home furnishings, appealing to a growing middle class seeking elegance without ostentation.
