DESIGNER'S NOTES
A silk scrunchie featuring a design reminiscent of those seen on liturgical vestments of the type worn by Bishops and Archbishops of the Anglican Church..
St Augustine of Canterbury, sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 597 CE, was a pivotal figure in the Christianisation of Anglo-Saxon England. Landing in Kent, he converted King Æthelberht and established a mission that founded churches, schools and monastic communities, laying the foundation for the English Church.
Appointed the first Archbishop of Canterbury, Augustine organised dioceses and clergy, introducing Roman liturgical practices and ecclesiastical governance. His efforts created a lasting ecclesiastical infrastructure, linking England to continental Christianity.
Augustine’s mission balanced diplomacy and spirituality, navigating local politics while promoting faith, and his work shaped the religious, cultural and political landscape of early medieval Britain for generations.
