DESIGNER'S NOTES
A colourful Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf in the multiple colours and traditional pattern of North American quilts.
Quilting in America developed as both necessity and artistic expression, with women stitching together worn fabrics to create warmth in draft prone homes. The word itself derives from the Old French cuilte the Latin culcita, meaning a stuffed sack or mattress.
Early settlers brought quilting techniques from Europe, yet American quilts soon developed a distinct language of pattern, reflecting community, politics and personal memory. Patchwork designs such as Log Cabin mirrored the frontier spirit, while Underground Railroad motifs are thought to have carried coded messages.
Contrary to the notion that only the poor quilted, affluent women often stitched elaborate coverlets from imported silks. Quilts were also treasured family records, passed down like manuscripts.
