DESIGNER'S NOTES

A black Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf with floral design derived from a carpet design typical of 17th century interiors.

Seventeenth-century European textile design reflects the era’s obsession with botanical naturalism and cabinet-of-curiosities taxonomy.

Driven by popular florilegia prints and Flemish tapestry traditions, decorative patterns shifted from rigid heraldic symbols to delicate, specimen-like floral studies. As seen in period English crewelwork and embroidered table covers, individual blossoms, tulips, carnations, lilies, and wild rosebuds, float independently across dark, velvet-like grounds. Stems arch naturally rather than following geometric grids, while tiny earth mounds and flowering trees anchor the lower margins.

Rendered in silk, wool, and metallic threads, these lush, specimen-driven layouts transformed domestic interiors into enduring indoor gardens, capturing the scientific curiosity and sumptuous decorative elegance of Baroque Europe.

STYLING

A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow. You can even create a shawl effect by knotting two scarves together behind your neck and allowing them to drape over your shoulders.
