Byzantine Mosaic Silk Habotai Scarf

DESIGNER'S NOTES

A classical Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a pattern derived from the ceiling mosaic of The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy.

A late antique Roman building, The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia was built between 425 and 450. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1996. Given the beginning of the Byzantine Empire being at least 25 years after its likely construction the Mausoleum isn't strictly Byzantine.

It's mosaics however, do offer a prototypical design, and a transition from Roman to Byzantine artistic styles, characterised by vibrant colours, detailed craftsmanship, and Christian themes. The interior of the dome at the centre is decorated as a starry sky, with a regular mosaic of golden stars on a dark blue background.

Above the entrance, sits a depiction of Christ as the Good Shepherd, youthful, beardless, and dressed in golden robes, among a flock of sheep, symbolising his benign guidance.
