DESIGNER'S NOTES
A Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf featuring an element from the work Fruit and Jug on a Table (c.1890-94) by the French painter Paul Cézanne.
Cezanne spent much of his life in Provence in the south of France, appreciating it for its peace and calm, but sent paintings to the capital to be featured in exhibits and to be sold. He once said, “I want to astonish Paris with an apple,” and spoke of his fascination with painting fruits: “They love having their portraits done. They sit there as if demanding pardon for changing colour. They come to you in all their perfume, speaking of the fields they have left, the rain that has nourished them, the sunrises they have seen.”
This work was a fitting example of this in action and was first sold to Ambroise Vollard in Paris on November 26, 1895.
