DESIGNER'S NOTES
A pair of red Fox & Chave cufflinks featuring a pair of rabbits from a detail of the Lady & the Unicorn tapestries (c.1500) housed at the Musée de Cluny in Paris.
The tapestries teem with animals that operate as moral and sensory symbols rather than naturalistic fauna. The lion and unicorn proclaim heraldry, power, and chastity, but the rabbits, often overlooked, carry a subtler charge.
In medieval bestiaries, rabbits signified fecundity, timidity, and uncontrolled reproduction; their presence tempers the courtly elegance of the scenes with reminders of bodily appetite and natural instinct. Positioned amid luxuriant flora, they quietly undermine idealised virtue, suggesting that desire persists even within refined, allegorical worlds.
